How is travel arranged in a long-distance surrogacy situation?
Surrogacy can be stressful and adding travel on top of it can make things even more stressful. So, in the case that you do have to travel for surrogacy, who would book your travel? If you plan on going through an agency for your surrogacy journey the agency case manager normally will book all your travel. A case manager is assigned to you once you are matched with intended parents. The case manager will normally handle all the booking from the flight to the car rental to the hotel stay. The case manager will be in close communication with you on what you want and what you need in terms of traveling. They will find the best times that work for you and your family. They will also have to work around you and your monthly cycle when that comes for you.
You will travel to the intended parent’s fertility clinic. That is usually where their embryos are created and stored. This means that normally you will have to travel to their clinic up to two times. One time for your one day work up and the other time for the transfer of the embryo or embryos. If the embryo transfer is unsuccessful there might be up to one or two more times that you need to travel. This is all talked about with both the surrogate and intended parents before any travel is booked. You will have all your other mentoring appointments locally to you.
Normally, booking your travel is very un-eventful and the case managers do a great job at keeping your stress down and helping with all the logistics with traveling. You will get a limit for food that day and other expenses that you might have. Be open and honest with what you need from your case manager when it comes to traveling and it should all go smoothly!
