Dear Sassy Surrogate: Social Media or Not?

Dear Sassy Surrogate: I really want to post my journey online whether it be in a blog/vlog, or FB video, etc. I want to use this opportunity to share with others and educate. How does that work when matched? What if my IP’s don’t want that? Can we compromise, such as I don’t identify them or the baby in any way? -Share with the world

Dear Share: Having a baby is a big deal, but having a baby for someone else comes with so much more responsibility. More people are involved in the journey of having a baby than just you and a significant other. Posting on social media that you are having a baby for someone else can be sharing too much for some intended parents. Social Media is huge in our everyday world right now. Social Media can be awesome but at the same time a very cruel place.  That is the risk we take by putting our lives on the internet. Sharing a surrogacy journey in hopes to reach one person or maybe even inspire someone to help someone with growing their family. Or, maybe there is someone out there going through a surrogacy journey that needed to hear your story for moral support.

Although I am cool with sharing my journey online for the world to see, the intended parents might not be, so respecting their decision is very important. This should be discussed before posting anything and everyone should be on the same page. Sharing anything on social media can be very helpful but it can also cause harm. So, be smart and safe about what is being posted. You never know who you will reach.
